TMJ, or the temporomandibular joint, is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. TMJ disorders, also known as TMD, occur when this joint becomes stressed, injured or misaligned. This type of problem may be a result of factors such as:

  • Stress
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)
  • Arthritis in the jaw joint
  • Trauma to the head, neck or jaw

Common signs of TMJ disorders include:

  • Grinding, popping or clicking sounds when the jaw moves, especially if it is opening wide
  • The inability to open the mouth wide
  • A locked or stuck jaw
  • Pain when chewing and biting
  • Frequent headaches
  • Pain in the neck, shoulders or ears

During your initial evaluation, our dentists and team will work with you to determine the cause of your TMJ disorder. There are several treatment options available, and we will work with you to create a treatment plan that meets your needs. Some of the options our dentists may discuss with you include jaw and facial relaxation exercises, lifestyle changes, restorative dental treatments, night or mouth guards, and jaw surgery.

Our dentists may also recommend BOTOX® to help treat your TMD. BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable medication provided to temporarily relieve symptoms of your condition. This treatment works as a temporary solution for TMJ disorders by blocking the pain signals from the nerves to the muscles in the area. This relieves discomfort and prevents the muscle movements that contribute to TMJ disorders. If you receive this treatment, our dentists will provide your injection quickly and comfortably. You may return to your normal daily activities as soon as you leave our office.
